Articulation

The information on this webpage is primarily intended for faculty and staff involved in the articulation review process.
Information for students, including the current status of ASSIST.org, can be found on our Transfer Credit webpage

What is transfer articulation?

Articulation refers to the review process between postsecondary institutions regarding the transferability of courses and is coordinated and facilitated by the Office of the Registrar.

Articulation agreements are formal, published agreements between institutions that describe how specific courses (or sequences of courses) taken at one college or university will be accepted as comparable to, or accepted in lieu of, a specific course (or courses) at Cal Poly Humboldt. Articulation agreements provide a curricular bridge between institutions to help ensure a smooth transition which prepares students for success in upper division coursework. Articulation agreements also serve as a recruiting tool by highlighting the roadmap of courses to take in order to transfer to and complete a degree at Cal Poly Humboldt.

Final decisions regarding articulation agreements are made by faculty in the respective disciplines.

Articulation agreements are published on ASSIST.org. For additional information see the Transfer Credit webpage.

Articulation Review

Requests will be routed using TES (Transfer Evaluation System) as described below and faculty may enter decisions via the TES system.

Articulation Requests

Articulation requests, proposals, issues and concerns are coordinated by the Office of the Registrar at Humboldt. The articulation team within the Office of the Registrar works closely with Articulation Officers and personnel at other campuses we have agreements with to communicate, implement and monitor all articulation agreements.

Articulation Decisions

The Humboldt department chair of the department that offers the most closely corresponding course is responsible for reviewing articulation requests and making decisions about course comparability.*

When articulation requests are forwarded to the department, we will provide the most current Course Outline of Record (COR) for the transfer course when available.  The California Intersegmental Committee of Academic Senates (ICAS) with representatives from CCCs, CSUs & UCs) encourages faculty to make articulation decisions based on the COR rather than individual course syllabi.

Additionally, ICAS encourages "CSU and UC faculty to collaborate with the CCCs as they develop or periodically review Course Identification Numbering System (C-ID) descriptors (which are based on the COR) for courses in their fields. (For additional information, see C-ID.net). A CCC course with a C-ID descriptor should simplify articulation agreements since a review process of the COR has already been completed." Articulating with C-ID descriptors can streamline the articulation review process as well as facilitate transfer for students with the Associate Degree for Transfer. For details and rationale, refer to the ICAS Memo Regarding Articulation and CCC Course Outlines (May 29, 2019) for CSU/UC Department Chairs and Faculty Involved with Community College Articulation.

*The department chair may designate another person in the department as the primary reviewer – generally another discipline faculty member.

Effective Dates

Articulation agreements adhere to strict effective dates and are generally not retroactive. Once approved, students who take the course from that point forward will benefit from the agreement in place. Students who completed the course prior to approval will not receive the articulation and would need to be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Transfer Credits without an articulation agreement

Agreements may not exist for every institution or course, or may not have existed at the time the course was taken by a particular student. More information can be found on our Transfer Credit website
