Permission number isn't working

Permission number isn't working

If a permission number isn’t working check:

  • for registration holds
  • your total registered units (see unit limit exceeded for appointment period)
  • course repeat limits
  • for time conflicts
  • add deadline

Permission numbers can be used to override a course prerequisite, but do not override holds, course repeat limits, your maximum unit load, course time conflicts, or the deadline to add a class.

Each permission number is specific to a particular class number and can only be used one time. Contact the class instructor if none of the reasons above apply.

Requisites have not been met.

Requisites have not been met.

Prerequisites are requirements that must be met before enrollment in a class. Usually, this is another course, but sometimes a prerequisite can be class standing (sophomore, junior, etc.) or having a particular major.

If the prerequisite is followed by the letter (C) it can be taken either before or concurrently.

Corequisites are classes that must be taken concurrently.

Check prerequisites before you register. See the course description in the University Catalog or check for prerequisites in DARS Degree Planner. If you do not have the appropriate requisites, a permission number is required.

Time conflict with another class

Time conflict with another class

If you receive this registration error:

1. Look for a different section of the class without a time conflict (if available); or

2. Register for the class that advances you towards graduation; or

3. Complete a Petition to Add Courses with Time Conflicts to request permission from each instructor to register for the classes.

Unit limit exceeded for appointment period

Unit limit exceeded for appointment period

If you receive this registration error:

  • Leave the course in your shopping cart until the enrollment limitation of 17 units increases to 19 units (see the activities & deadlines for the date each semester).
  • If adding the class would put your semester units over 19, but you need the class to graduate, you  can petition to add classes beyond the 19-unit cap. See Petition to Raise Unit Cap for instructions.

Undergraduate, graduate, and post-baccalaureate students have an enrollment limitation of 17 units until the unit cap increases to 19 units (see the activities & deadlines calendar for the date each semester). This limitation does not apply to credential students.

Due to their academic standing, some students are limited to enrolling in no more than 12 units. Advisors cannot change units for these students. These students should contact the Office of the Registrar, SBS 133, for information on their unit limit.

Wait list a closed class

Wait list a closed class

The wait list creates a queue of students for specific classes and enrolls eligible students in newly opened seats. It also provides a way to monitor class demand and may result in additional sections. Wait lists are available from the first day of early registration through the Saturday of the first week of classes.

For step by step instructions, see  Student Center Help: Use Wait list
